Malgorzata Tracz, the MP behind the bill, told PAP on Monday that she is planning to put the legislation to the Sejm, which is the lower house of the Polish parliament, in the first half of the year.

"At the beginning of February, I will present the objectives of the project for the abolition of fur farms, together with the justification, at the meeting of the parliamentary group for the prohibition of animal farming," she said.

In her words, "the project assumes that from 2025 no more new farms can be created", and by 2029 all fur farms will have been closed down.

"My project provides for a five-year transition period," she added. "It foresees the payment of compensation to the farmers."

She explained that the compensations would be granted on the basis of yearly revenue for the last two years, but the amounts will decrease in size the longer the farmers delay the closure of their farms.

"If the bill is adopted… from January 1, 2029 there will be no fur farms left in Poland," she said.

The Greens form part of the Civic Coalition, which is the main political grouping of the governing alliance. (PAP)
