Interior minister warns rains make situation difficult in south Poland

Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski has admitted that the weather situation in southern Poland is getting "really difficult" as rains continue and water levels in rivers are rising.

"In several places the situation is really difficult," Kierwinski said before a crisis team meeting on Monday morning. "I'm talking about Bielski County and the Wapienica, Ilownica and Biala rivers."

"We'll receive reports from all services and province governors and we'll be potentially making further decisions when it comes to moving further assets if there is such a need," Kierwinski said.

He added that all state services were ready "to take more radical action if necessary."

Last September, Poland's south and south-west were ravaged by huge floods that caused multi-billion-euro losses and the country is still repairing damage to infrastructure in the region. (PAP) jd/mf pap/
