Lithuanian president invites Polish president-elect to Vilnius
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda in a telephone conversation on Tuesday congratulated Polish President-elect Karol Nawrocki on his election victory and while expressing hope for closer cooperation, he invited him to Vilnius, Nauseda's press office has said.
"I hope that we will continue to be strong allies in NATO and the EU and we will jointly contribute to building the security of the whole of Europe and supporting Ukraine, which is suffering as a result of the Russian aggression," Nauseda was quoted as saying in the statement released on Wednesday.
Nawrocki, who is supported by Poland's main opposition party, the socially-conservative Law and Justice, will be sworn in as Poland's next president on August 6 for a five-year term. On Sunday, he beat Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, a centrist candidate supported by the main ruling party Civic Coalition.
Nauseda said Nawrocki's visit "will be an opportunity to not only discuss the current issues related to cooperation between Lithuania and Poland, but also to strengthen the friendship between both countries."
On Monday, Nauseda said the relations with Poland's outgoing president, Andrzej Duda, who is also a PiS ally, had been "excellent," adding that relations with Lithuania's western neighbour "are a priority of our foreign policy." (PAP)
