Local government elections start in Poland
Local elections started in Poland at 7 am on Sunday. Polling stations will close at 9pm.
Run-off votes, if necessary, will be held on April 21.
Poles are to elect nearly 47,000 district, county and provincial councillors and close to 2,500 district heads and town and city mayors.
There are over 29 million Poles eligible to vote.
The run-off round of voting will be held in districts where no candidate for a district head or town or city mayor has won over 50 percent of valid votes.
A 24-hour campaign silence period started at midnight on Friday. The campaigning ban will end after polling stations have closed at 9pm on Sunday.
The State Electoral Commission (PKW) will hold four press conferences on Sunday to inform the public about the election turnout and any possible incidents. The first is planned at 10am, the second at 1:30pm and the third at 6:30pm. The fourth meeting with journalists is planned at 10pm, after the closure of polling stations.
Exit polls will be presented on Sunday night by TVP1 Polish public television as well as TVN and Polsat private broadcasters, which plan to announce them following the closure of polling stations. (PAP)
