Nawrocki meets Pope Leo XIV at Vatican
Polish President Karol Nawrocki and his wife and two children were received by Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Friday.
During the private audience, Nawrocki presented the pope with an image of Our Lady of Gietrzwald, and invited him to Poland for the 150th anniversary of the Marian apparitions in 2027.
Following the meeting, the president held talks with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, joined by Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Holy See’s foreign minister.
Nawrocki's visit to the Vatican came in the first month of his presidency, after his trip to Washington to meet US President Donald Trump. Later on Friday he will meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace.
The Holy See said in a statement later on Friday: "During the cordial talks, held at the Secretariat of State, the socio-political situation of the country was discussed, with particular reference to the values on which Polish society is founded and the need to build consensus in the light of the challenges it has to address.
"The conversation then turned to matters of an international nature, with special attention to the conflict in Ukraine and European security," the Vatican added.(PAP)mj/mf/jd
