Nawrocki's top security official talks defence with US ambassador
Bartosz Grodecki, head of the National Security Bureau (BBN), an agency reporting to President Karol Nawrocki, has met with US Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose to discuss the US military involvement in Poland and industrial and military ties.
"The conversation covered, among other things, the U.S. military engagement in Poland, including in the form of permanent presence, the upcoming NATO Summit in Ankara, and military-industrial cooperation between Poland and the United States," the BBN wrote in English on X on Wednesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said he had passed to US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth Poland's proposal to create a new permanent US military base in Poland, with Warsaw's financial backing.
About 10,000 US soldiers are currently stationed in Poland, most under the rotational format, with some present permanently in the country.
In May, reports about the Pentagon's alleged suspension of the temporary deployment of 4,000 soldiers from the US Army's 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team to Poland caused turbulence in Polish political circles and society. But a week later, US President Donald Trump announced Washington would send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, citing his close relationship with Nawrocki. (PAP)
