A new mechanised division will be stationed in the town of Karakule, outside the northeastern city of Bialystok, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland's defence minister, said on Wednesday.

Kosiniak-Kamysz was speaking at the inauguration ceremony for operation 'Safe Podlasie' at the Karakule military base. The operation starts on Thursday and is aimed to increase the security of Poland's border with Belarus.

He said that the decision to place the division near Bialystok had been taken recently, adding that the unit would be part of the 1st Legion Infantry Division.

It will serve as a continuation of military assistance from the army to the border guard formations protecting the Polish-Belarus border.

"That is the reason why we will be placing the division in Bialystok, so the security of the border defence will be even more stable, as our newest (military-PAP) equipment will be stationed here, tanks, infantry combat vehicles, armed long-range guns, rocket launchers. They will be here so that the people of Podlasie can feel safe permanently," Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

The defence minister also added that PLN 2 billion (EUR 466 million) funds would be invested to bolster the eastern border security up to 2028.

A significant part of the sum will be invested in the Podlaskie region, PLN 1.3 billion (EUR 303 million), and will cover the building of military quarters and facilities. (PAP)
