The iconic Empire State Building in Manhattan, New York, will be illuminated in white and red on Monday at 10pm Polish time to commemorate Poland's Independence Day.

The symbolic lighting will be performed by Robert Lewandowski, the captain of the Polish national football team and star striker for FC Barcelona.

This event is intended to be a gesture of recognition for Polish history and culture, as well as for the millions of Poles residing in America.

The white and red illumination of the Empire State Building will be the first in history to commemorate Poland's Independence Day. (PAP)
