Film star Szaflarska dies at 102, President pays homage
Polish doyen film and stage actress Danuta Szaflarska died Sunday afternoon aged 102. Szaflarska appeared in many popular Polish films, including Poland's first post-war production, the 1946 Zakazane Piosenki (Forbidden Songs).
Active onscreen and onstage almost until her death, Szaflarska held several distinctions for her acting work. She was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Commander's Cross and Commander's Cross with Star, one of Poland's highest state decorations, and the Gold Medal of Gloria Artis.
On her recent 102nd birthday Dantuta Szaflarska received personal congratulations from Poland's President Andrzej Duda.
"She combined artistry with deep patriotism, enchanted with her gracefulness", President Duda wrote on his website Sunday upon news of Szaflarska's death.
Szaflarska, who appeared in many popular Polish films, including Poland's first post-war production Zakazane Piosenki (Forbidden Songs), died on Saturday night aged 102.
"A legendary actress who will be remembered by her magnificent stage and screen roles. She symbolised the post-war rebirth of Polish cinema", Duda wrote, recalling that Szaflarska remained an active actress almost until her death.
He also recalled that Szaflarska had taken part in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and stressed that she "combined artistry with a deep sense of patriotism". (PAP)
