Earlier Tusk attended the "Role of the Catholic Church in the Process of European Integration" conference.

Speaking to reporters after the conference, Tusk stressed that he believed for months, after the referendum in Great Britain, that it would be possible to reverse the decision.

"It's up to the Britons, but I think that the decision has already been taken. (...) Britain's exit from the EU has been decided upon," he said.

"We have been doing our best to put the process in order and avoid chaos. Let me say this, very openly, that I am being attacked by British tabloids which suggest that I represent the EU interests," he went on to say.

Asked when an initial agreement can be reached, Tusk said that "we will try to conclude (negotiations - PAP) in October or at least to bring our positions closer. If such a need arises, I will convene a meeting of the European Council in November. I think there is a chance to reach an accord by the end of the year," Tusk answered.

He also expressed his hope that after the deal is reached, it will be possible to avoid considerable losses on both sides of La Manche. (PAP)
