British PM says Poland one of Britain's closest friends and allies
British PM Theresa May said before the Polish-British intergovernmental consultations on Thursday that Poland is one of the closest friends and allies of Great Britain and valued the contribution of Polish migrants to her country's development.
"Poland is one of our closest friends and allies. This partnership works for both our nations, making us safer, more prosperous and more secure," reads a press release published on the British PM's Office website.
"Throughout history, UK and Poland have stood side by side. We share an unwavering commitment to supporting a stable and peaceful Europe, but are also clear-eyed in recognising the threats we face and the required response."
"Today’s talks will agree ambitious steps that build on the landmark joint Defence and Security treaty we signed in Warsaw last year, and set a course for further collaboration in the years ahead," the British PM was quoted as saying.
"Almost one million Poles make their lives in Britain – the largest diaspora in the UK," she stressed.
"I value the contribution the Polish community makes to our economy and our society, and am committed to ensuring the UK remains a welcoming place for Poles to live, work and study," she underlined.
"Today is an opportunity to repeat my message to Polish people – you can stay, and we want you to stay," PM said ahead of her meeting with her Polish counterpart.
Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki is travelling to London on Thursday where, together with PM May, he will co-chair Polish-British intergovernmental consultations. The main topics of the talks will be Brexit and future cooperation within NATO.
The Polish PM will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz, as well as by representatives of the defence, internal affairs, finance and entrepreneurship and technology ministries.
Morawiecki will start the London visit with a meeting with PM May. Later, the two government officials will meet with representatives of the Polish community. Next, Morawiecki and May will co-chair a plenary session of both delegations. (PAP)
