This is the latest in a series of awards presented to the film and its Polish director. "Ida" has already won some 50 prizes in Poland and around the world, including four European Film Awards, the European Parliament Lux Prize and a BAFTA award. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe.

"Ida", a black-and-white drama set in Poland in the early 1960s, tells the story of Anna, a beautiful 18-year-old orphan preparing to be a nun. The discovery of a living relative brings monumental change and the uncovering of painful truths. Anna learns that she was born into a Jewish family, that her real name was Ida, and that her parents were murdered during World War Two. (PAP)
