Polish industrial sector immune to EU slowdown - entrepreneurship minister

Poland's industrial sector is immune to the slowdown seen in the EU, Entrepreneurship and Technology Minister Jadwiga Emilewicz said on Wednesday commenting on the latest data of the country's Central Statistical Office (GUS).

She added that the Polish industrial sector should be the February leader in the EU and that data for March and April will confirm the resilience of the Polish economy.

As GUS announced earlier on Wednesday, Poland's industrial output rose by 6.9 percent year on year in February 2019.

"Industrial production rose in February by 6.9 pct year on year reaching a much better result than expected by economists (4.8 pct y/y). Given the high growth of production in February 2018 (by 7.3 pct), this result should definitely be considered positive," Emilewicz argued.

The February growth that was significant was recorded in the processing sector (7 pct y/y), the minister pointed out.

In Emilewicz's opinion, it is worth noting the Polish industrial sector's resilience to the tendency observed in the EU, where since November 2018 industrial production has fallen on an annual basis (on average by almost 2 pct).

"Moreover, the growth recorded in January (6.1 pct - PAP) was only lower than the one sported by Slovakia (7.2 pct), and in February we should be the leader in the EU," she assessed. (PAP)
