Poland seeks fair energy transition - PM
Transition to a low-emission economy should take place at a pace that corresponds to Polish priorities, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told a public radio broadcaster Radio Katowice on Saturday.
Speaking about the future of Poland's southern region of Upper Silesia, which is home to the country's heavy industry and mining, he said that the changes resulting from EU climate policy goals should not be made at the cost of people.
He added that two objectives, maintaining jobs related to coal mines and energy on the one hand and moving towards a low-emission economy on the other, must be accommodated.
"Indeed, due to the European Union's climate policy we face a challenge, but the trick is to reconcile these two goals and not give up anything hastily so that transformation, or economic changes, could take place in a rhythm that corresponds to the possibilities of absorbing these changes throughout the Upper Silesian mining region."
"This is what we are committed to," Morawiecki said. He added that he talked to the President of the EC Ursula von der Leyen about a fair energy transition fund to allocating substantial financial means for new investments in the province to promote the creation of new high-paid jobs in other industries.
