Trump calls off Poland visit over Florida hurricane threat
US President Donald Trump has cancelled his visit to Poland planned for September 1-2, explaining that all federal government resources need to be focused on the incoming hurricane Dorian. Vice President Mike Pence will represent Trump in Poland
The US president was scheduled to take part in major ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II in Warsaw on Sunday and on the next day he was to hold talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda and PM Mateusz Morawiecki.
Speaking in the White House Rose Garden, Trump said he had already informed Polish President Andrzej Duda about the change of plans.
"I've just spoken to President Duda of Poland, and expressed to him my warmest wishes and the wishes of the American people. Our highest priority is the safety and security of the people in the path of the hurricane. And I will be rescheduling my trip to Poland in the near future," Trump said.
According to the latest forecast, Hurricane Dorian is set to gain strength and is feared to become a category four hurricane on a five-level scale. If the forecasts prove right, Dorian could be the first category four or stronger hurricane to hit Florida since 1992, when Hurricane Andrew devastated the US state, killing 40 people. (PAP)
