Polish and US presidents to meet in New York on Monday - pres. aide
Poland has received an offer from the American administration to organise a meeting between Polish President Andrzej Duda and US President Donald Trump this Monday in New York, Duda's chief aide Krzysztof Szczerski told PAP on Thursday.
Szczerski told PAP the meeting would be planned to take place before the start of the debate of the United Nations General Assembly, an occasion for world leaders to gather at UN Headquarters to discuss global issues.
"This is the first possible date for a meeting between the presidents after September 1. It is a good signal, which means that it matters to our partner that the presidents meet as soon as possible," added the presidential aide.
He pointed out that, "President Duda wants it to be a clearly defined and conclusive meeting."
"During this meeting, we will work on the signing of a declaration regarding an increase in the presence of American troops in Poland, which was to have been signed in Warsaw during President Trump's visit," said Szczerski.
He added that he would be able to confirm on Friday if the meeting will take place.
The US president canceled his visit to Poland, which was to take place in early September, to remain in the United States to monitor Hurricane Dorian.
The Wirtualna Polska web portal wrote on Thursday, citing an unofficial source associated with the State Department, that "a bilateral meeting between President Andrzej Duda and President Donald Trump was scheduled on Monday, September 23, in New York."
Andrzej Duda will visit the United States on September 21-26; the Polish leader will, inter alia, take part in a high-level debate during the UN General Assembly in New York. (PAP)
