A joint plenary session of defence and foreign ministers planned for Thursday morning will discuss the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq, according to Sobczak. The afternoon session, to be attended only by foreign ministers, will be devoted to anti-IS efforts in Syria and other areas.

"Minister Waszczykowski will also take part in a working breakfast hosted by US Secretary of State John F. Kerry", Sobczak told PAP.

He added that the meeting in Washington would summarise the coalition's operations so far and discuss future actions against the Islamic State. Invitations to the meeting were sent to 40 countries as well as the European Union, United Nations and NATO, according to Sobczak.

Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz is also taking part in the Washington meeting. (PAP)
