This includes more than PLN 1.5 billion worth of apple crops and PLN 1 billion worth of rape seed, the organisation says. For raspberries and cherries, the figure is PLN 400 million each, and for cucumbers it is PLN 200 million.

A new report released by Greenpeace's Polish branch on Monday shows that bees are essential to agriculture, Greenpeace Polska's Katarzyna Jagiello comments. "Without their hard work, it would be impossible to grow many varieties of fruit and vegetables that are crucial to the Polish economy," she says.

For this reason every effort must be made to protect bees from harmful pesticides and fertilisers, which have been increasingly common in Poland in recent years, Greenpeace says.

Pesticide sales alone grew by 44 percent in Poland from 2005 to 2014, one of the steepest increases in Europe, Greenpeace warns. (PAP)
