The head of the Prime Minister's Office, Michal Dworczyk, is responsible for organising the facility, he added.

The hospital, to open in conference halls at the National Stadium, is planned to have around 500 beds, Mueller told a Polish public television broadcaster.

He said that the government had been taking steps envisaged in the crisis package in connection with the development of the coronavirus pandemic. "We see that the number of new infections is growing so fast that we have to secure beds to hospitalise those who need it," he said.

On the subject of how long this temporary hospital would be used for, Mueller said that, bearing in mind the development of the situation, "one could fear that it could be weeks, or even months, during which such facilities would be used to protect the health and life of Poles." (PAP)
