About 90,000 charity bags collected across Poland

Caritas Poland has managed to collect some 90,000 bags with goods for the needy as part of its charity initiative called "Tytka charytatywna" (Charity Bag), PAP was told by Father Waldemar Hanas, head of Caritas for the Poznan Archdiocese.

"Tytka" is a local expression used in the area of Poznan (western Poland) for a paper bag.

The initiative, this year in its fourth edition, is carried out by 11 diocese-level Caritas branches across Poland. In Poznan, it ended with a charity concert, with proceeds to be spent on renovation of an orphanage in Leszno, 75 km south of Poznan.

The bags are filled with food and cleaning products, and weigh about 7 kilograms each on average, according to Father Waldemar Hanas. "Nationwide, this equals tonnes of aid that reaches thousands of people and families in need."

Poznan Metropolitan Bishop Stanislaw Gadecki stressed that the initiative opposes "the growing layers of narcissism and indifference. It builds a community based on the exchange of gifts". (PAP)
