Poland disappointed with Orban after EU vote – Kaczynski
Poland is disappointed with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s decision to support the re-election of Donald Tusk as head of the European Council, Polish ruling party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski suggested on Thursday.
Orban’s support for Tusk to stay on as head of the European Council is proof that the European Union is dominated by "one state": Germany, Kaczynski said.
"This shows ... the present shape of the European Union, which has nothing to do" with what its founders intended for it, Kaczynski said at a press conference when asked whether Orban’s move marks a defeat for Polish diplomacy.
"... I admit that we are disappointed with Prime Minister Orban’s approach, but we realise just how powerful the pressure must have been and how today’s European Union is heading down a road that will eventually lead to its breakup", he said.
He added that unless the EU stops "marching down this road", it will one day "become history."
Kaczynski also said that Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party of which he is leader is a strong supporter of the continued existence of the European Union.
"But it must be a Union in which it will not be possible to elect someone for a high office against the government of his own country," Kaczynski commented. (PAP)
