A Belarusian soldier tried to fire a flare gun at Polish personnel on Poland’s border with Belarus while others threatened to open fire on Polish troops, the Defence Ministry reported on Friday.

Areas adjacent to Poland's border with Belarus have been under a state of emergency since September 2 due to migratory pressure Warsaw blames on a policy of Belarus's Alexander Lukashenko regime aimed at destabilising the EU. Poland has deployed hundreds of Border Guard officers and troops to the border area.

"Further provocations on the border," the ministry wrote on Twitter. "Yesterday a Belarusian soldier tried to fire a flare gun in the direction of Polish soldiers.

"A hundred metres further on, five armed Belarusians tried to destroy fencing, at the same time shouting that they would shoot Polish soldiers," the ministry wrote in another tweet. "After additional Army and Border Guard forces were called to the area, the Belarusians retreated."

The latest incidents come a day after the Defence Ministry reported that on Wednesday that Belarusian troops guarding a group of about 250 migrants near the border fence threatened to open fire on Polish forces.

The Belarusian charge d'affaires, Alexander Chesnovsky, has also been called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to explain the intrusion of armed and uniformed people onto Polish territory on the night of November 1. (PAP)
