"We have no information indicating that our citizens have been affected by Hurricane Melissa," said Maciej Wewior, the foreign ministry's spokesperson. "We are aware that our missionaries were present in areas of Cuba threatened by the storm, but our diplomatic mission remains in constant contact with them, and there have been no reports that they are in danger."

Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on Tuesday as a Category 5 storm, before hitting Cuba as a Category 4, ranking it one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record. The storm caused widespread power outages, landslides and significant infrastructure damage in both countries.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness told the US broadcaster CNN on Tuesday that hospitals, homes, roads and commercial properties had been damaged, adding that the country expects "some loss of life" as a result of the hurricane. (PAP)
