The Sejm, the lower house of the Polish parliament, has voted in favour of an amendment enabling prescription-free access to the 'morning after' contraceptive pill.

The amendment overturns that law and enables the direct application of a European Commission decision on drug availability in the EU.

On Thursday, 224 MPs voted in favour of the bill, 196 against, and one person abstained.

The draft law covers one particular drug called EllaOne, and will be available over the counter to anyone over the age of 15.

The main hurdle for the reintroduction of the prescription-free pill is likely to be the president, Andrzej Duda, who is considered an ally of the former government that made access to the pill more difficult to obtain. (PAP)
