Poland to build its first small nuclear power plant in Wloclawek
Poland's state-run energy giant Orlen will build the country's and Europe's first BWRX-300 small modular nuclear power plant in the central city of Wloclawek, Orlen has announced in a press release.
The Thursday announcement follows an agreement between Orlen and Synthos Green Energy, which have established a joint venture - Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE) to develop the project.
Under a licence deal, OSGE will have full access to US-developed BWRX-300 technology, which will "allow the company to move forward with the process that will culminate in the construction of Poland's first SMR nuclear power plant at a location of key importance to Orlen - in Wloclawek," the press release read.
"Europe's first small BWRX-300 nuclear power plant will be built in Poland. We are building the energy of tomorrow," Orlen CEO Ireneusz Fafara was cited in the press release.
Orlen plans to have at least two SMRs with a combined capacity of 0.6 gigawatts by 2035, according to the company's strategy.(PAP)
