Poland extends border controls with Slovakia
Temporary checks on Poland’s border with Slovakia will be extended for another 11 days, until December 3, according to a new Polish Interior Ministry regulation.
Poland first imposed controls on its border with Slovakia on October 4 in accordance with the Schengen Borders Code in order to stem the number of migrants crossing into Poland from Slovakia.
The checks had originally been put in place for 10 days but then were prolonged by another 20 days to November 2, and later to November 22.
The new regulation, signed by Mariusz Kaminski, the interior minister, was published in the Journal of Laws on Wednesday. It will come into force on Thursday.
Under the new regulation, the border with Slovakia can be crossed at several road crossings, three rail crossings and two pedestrian crossings. Some crossings, which had earlier been only used by pedestrians, can also be crossed by passenger vehicles.
On October 13, Minister Kaminski announced that the European Commission had been informed about Poland's decision in accordance with the Schengen Borders Code. (PAP)
