The amount of EUR 2.967 billion was paid out from the Modernisation Fund and allocated to support a total of 39 energy projects in 10 EU countries.

Much of the money allocated to Poland will go towards the modernisation of the truck charging infrastructure.

The investments are intended to support the modernisation of energy systems, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the energy, industrial and transport sectors, and improvement of energy efficiency. Projects that have received support focus primarily on renewable energy sources.

"The Modernisation Fund is a key instrument supporting decarbonisation... By supporting this group of member states in modernising their energy systems, we are moving forward on our decarbonisation path by investing in clean technologies that will also make us competitive in the long term," Vice-President of the European Commission Marosz Shefczovicz said.

The Modernisation Fund is financed from revenues from the sale of emission allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). It supports 13 lower-income Member States in moving towards climate neutrality. The beneficiaries of the Fund are: Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, and from January this year. also: Greece, Portugal and Slovenia.
