Reaching a speed of 282km/h, Hurricane Melissa was classified as a Category 5 storm, the highest on the scale. The world's most powerful hurricane of the year could also be the strongest wind ever to strike Jamaica. Melissa is anticipated to make landfall on the island on Tuesday.

Maciej Wewior from the foreign ministry confirmed to PAP on Tuesday that there are ten Polish tourists and a holiday representative staying in Jamaica. According to the media reports, the group includes renowned actor Michal Zebrowski and his family.

"We are monitoring the situation on the ground and ensuring that our citizens can return home as soon as possible after this event," Wewior said.

He appealed to Poles staying on the island to register with the Odyseusz localisation system and follow the recommendations of local authorities and services. (PAP)
