"It's here on the eastern border (of Poland - PAP) where the true fight with illegal migration is taking place," Marcin Kierwinski told a press conference held at the Poland-Belarus-Ukraine border tripoint on Saturday.

He mentioned that more than PLN 600 million (EUR 140 million) has been invested so far in strengthening the infrastructure along the Polish-Belarusian border, including technical defences as well as optical and electronic surveillance systems.

According to Kierwinski, the already operational electronic barrier along the Bug River, which forms part of the Polish-Belarusian border, allows "detecting attempts at illegal border crossing in real time".

"Those investments will be continued," he announced.

Kierwinski also said that the Polish Border Guard currently employs nearly 16,000 officers, the largest number since its inception, and has announced plans to hire an additional 2,500.(PAP)
