The two held a telephone conversation on Thursday afternoon, Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote on the X platform later that day.

"FM Sikorski announced that the Polish embassy in Tehran has taken over the duties of some EU countries that have evacuated their posts," MFA said.

"He encouraged Iran to maintain a cease-fire in its confrontation with Israel and the US," it added.

Germany, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Portugal are among the European nations that suspended the operation of their diplomatic missions in the Iranian capital.

Last week, MFA spokesman Pawel Wronski said that the Polish embassy in Tehran is one of the few that had not yet been evacuated from the city.

Following a week of air strikes between Israel and Iran, the United States joined the conflict by bombing three Iranian uranium enrichment sites in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan on the night of June 21. On June 24, Israel and Iran agreed to a cease-fire. (PAP)mmr/mf
