Poland's Braun, Obajtek among Politico's 23 'kookiest MEPs'

Grzegorz Braun, a Polish far-right politician known for his anti-Semitic acts, and Daniel Obajtek, a village head-turned-top-CEO, have been listed among the '23 kookiest MEPs heading to the European Parliament' by the news outlet Politico.

Grzegorz Braun, member of the far-right party Confederation, made the headlines when he put out Menorah candles during a ceremony that marked the Jewish Hanukah holiday in Poland's parliament last year.

Politico named Braun "the destroyer of religious symbols" and quoted his other acts, including "vandalising a Christmas tree adorned with baubles bearing EU and Ukrainian flags."

Obajtek, whom the former ruling party, the socially-conservative Law and Justice (PiS), promoted from a low-rank village head to the CEO of Poland's biggest company, the state-owned fuel firm PKN Orlen, was named "mannequin PiS."

Politico said that the "golden child" of PiS "may now run into Michal Szczerba," the head of a parliamentary commission investigating the cash-for-visas scandal, who had unsuccessfully summoned Obajtek to testify before the commission. Szczerba has also been elected an MEP.

"Obajtek refused (to testify - PAP), saying it would take up valuable time 'at the last moment of the elections'," Politico wrote.

Politico awarded each of the 23 politicians its 'wild factor', ranging from 1 to 5. Obajtek won 4 out of 5 while Braun got the top score. (PAP)
