Holownia, the leader of the centrist Poland 2050, a junior partner in Prime Minister Donald Tusk's ruling coalition, had held the position since November 2023. Under the coalition agreement, he was due to step down on November 13, with the position passing to Wlodzimierz Czarzasty, deputy speaker of the Sejm and co-leader of The Left party, another member of the coalition.

Last week, however, Holownia announced that he and Czarzasty had agreed that a new speaker would be elected either on the first or the second day of the next four-day session of the Sejm, which begins on November 18 at 11am.
