Poles are voting for their municipal heads, town presidents and city mayors in a run-off to the April 7 vote.

In the first round, the majority of the votes in provincial assemblies went to Law and Justice (PiS), the main opposition party.

Candidates backed by the ruling coalition's backbone party Civic Coalition (KO) came first in most of Poland's largest cities.

But in some cities, including southern Krakow, western Poznan and southwestern Wroclaw mayoral races, went to run-offs after no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round.

Gorzow Wielkopolski, Kielce, Olsztyn, Rzeszow, Torun and Zielona Gora are the other six province capitals where the second round is held.

Polling stations are open between 7am and 9pm.  This time, the candidate with the most support wins the election, with no 50 percent threshold applied. (PAP)
