Polish FM hails Trump's confidence in Ukraine reclaiming its territory
Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has welcomed the words of US President Donald Trump showing the American leader now believes that Ukraine can win back all territory lost to Russia.
After a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York on Tuesday, Trump took to Truth Social to share his unexpected remarks. He wrote that he now believes that with backing from the European Union and NATO, Ukraine has the capacity "to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form." He added that with "time, patience, and financial support," restoring the country’s pre-war borders was a realistic outcome.
On Thursday, Sikorski was asked to comment on Trump's post at a press briefing in New York.
"It was a pleasant surprise that President Trump demonstrated his confidence that Ukraine could restore control over its internationally recognised borders," Sikorski said.
He added that had he been in Kyiv himself, he would have been impressed that the Ukrainians were able to find weak points in Russia's defenses and effectively hit Russian refineries, even using weapons produced independently in Ukraine. "This is causing real problems for the Russian army," Sikorski argued.
He also said that Trump "is known for liking to support the winner," therefore he must have information that "the bloody Russian offensive has lost its momentum."
He added that the fact that, according to Trump, Europe must take over the majority of financing and support for Ukraine in the war is "nothing new." "We've known this for some time," Sikorski said. (PAP)
