Polish foreign ministry left out of Nawrocki's US trip

Poland's foreign ministry representatives have not been invited to accompany President Karol Nawrocki during his visit to the US, the ministry said, adding that they remain open and hope for future cooperation.

"Nobody from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be part of the delegation," Deputy Foreign Minister Anna Radwan-Roehrenschef told Polish Radio. "We simply didn't receive an invitation."

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has repeatedly stressed that the ministry and its representatives remain open to consultations and cooperation ahead of any presidential foreign trip, a position also shared by the government.

"Perhaps the president and his team are still learning their roles. Let's give it some time, and I believe the president will choose to cooperate with the foreign ministry and other ministers once he recognises the clear benefits," Radwan-Roehrenschef added.

But Zbigniew Bogucki, the head of the President's Office, said the government does not have diplomatic ties with Washington, and the country needs to restore a good relationship with the US first. When speaking to Polish Radio on Tuesday, he also recalled former Polish presidents' US visits carried out without high-profile ministry representatives among the delegation.

On Tuesday, Nawrocki embarks on his first foreign visit, to the United States. On Wednesday, he is scheduled to meet his US counterpart, Donald Trump, for talks on Polish energy, military security, and efforts to bring peace to Ukraine. Trump will welcome Nawrocki at the White House at 11am local time on Wednesday and the bilateral meeting is to start at 11:25am in the Oval Office. It will be followed by plenary talks.

At 1:30pm on Wednesday Nawrocki will address Polish media in Blair House, where he will be accommodated during his stay in Washington. At 4:15pm the Polish president will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. (PAP)
