Polish jets intercept another Russian spy plane over Baltic Sea
Polish air force has intercepted another Russian surveillance plane flying over the Baltic Sea, Poland's defence minister said on Thursday, following a similar incident earlier this week.
Early in the day, the Operational Command of the Armed Forces (DORSZ) announced on X the deployment of "all available forces and resources at its disposal" in connection with Russian attacks on Western targets in Ukraine.
"Duty fighter pairs and an early warning aircraft were scrambled, and ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems reached the highest state of readiness," the statement read.
DORSZ announced the end of air force operations after 10am.
Later, Minister of National Defence Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz told a press conference in Kartuzy, northern Poland, that "Today, MiG-29s intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, just like yesterday."
On Wednesday, DORSZ reported that a pair of Polish MiG-29 fighters on duty identified and escorted a Russian Il-20 plane carrying out a reconnaissance mission over the Baltic Sea in international airspace. The aircraft had no filed flight plan and its transponder was turned off.(PAP)
