"Unfortunately, we were unable to save one of the patients," Wojciech Smetek told PAP on Thursday.

The victim was one of nine miners transported to CLO on Wednesday. More than a dozen people were injured in a methane fire.

Smetek reported that the miner, who sustained fatal injuries, experienced burns covering 40 percent of his body, which included damage to his respiratory tract, head, and face.

JSW, the mine owner, said on Wednesday that the methane ignited at a depth of more than 850 metres.

JSW's deputy CEO Adam Rozmus said that 44 employees had been evacuated in total.

Lukasz Pach, head of the provincial ambulance service, said at a press conference on Wednesday that 16 people had been offered medical aid and 14 had been taken to hospitals. (PAP)
