Polish ministers congratulate Sweden on joining Nato
Poland’s foreign and defence ministers have congratulated Sweden on becoming a member of Nato.
"It's official! Sweden is the 32nd member of Nato," Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, the head of Polish defence, wrote on the X platform on Thursday.
"The protocol for Sweden's accession to the Alliance has entered into force," he added.
"This is a significant strengthening of the joint defence capabilities on the northern flank," he continued. "Once again: huge congratulations!"
The same sentiment was shared by Poland's foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski.
"We are delighted to welcome Sweden as a new member of Nato, our unity in defending the freedom and security of the region becomes even stronger with the addition of our partner to the Alliance," Sikorski said in a video published on X on Thursday.
He also expressed support for Sweden on behalf of the Polish pro-EU government.
"As a coalition of October 15 (the day of parliamentary elections - PAP) we will stand firmly behind the European Union, the North Atlantic Alliance and the Weimar Triangle," he said. "This is what we promised the Polish people. Together we are building a strong, united Europe."
The Weimar Triangle is a trilateral format of cooperation that includes France, Germany and Poland.
The Swedish government decided on Thursday afternoon that the country would join NATO. This is the last step that had to be taken on the Swedish side for the country to become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance. Later in the day, Sweden officially became a Nato member after its prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, handed over the final documentation to the US government. (PAP)
