Polish PM, FM 'shocked' by attack on Slovak PM Fico
Polish prime minister and foreign minister have said they are 'shocked" after Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and injured, according to reports.
The incident occurred after a Slovakian government meeting in the town of Handlova, in the west of the country.
The injured prime minister was taken to hospital.
According to the Slovak TA3 television channel, the alleged attacker was detained by the police.
Donald Tusk, Polish prime minister took to social media to send a message of support to his Slovak peer.
"Shocking news from Slovakia. Robert, my thoughts are with you at this very difficult time," he wrote.
Radoslaw Sikorski, the foreign minister, reacted to the news on the X platform.
"I am shocked by the attack on the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico. I hope that the Prime Minister will recover and explain all the circumstances of this terrible event," he wrote.
According to witnesses, Fico was outside the Community Centre in Handlova, where the government meeting was held, to greet residents when several shots were fired. Security guards lifted the prime minister from the ground and carried him to a car, in which they took him to the hospital.
Police sealed off the scene and the Community Centre was evacuated.(PAP)
