Polish politicians congratulate Trump on presidency
Polish politicians have congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration as the 47th US president.
On Monday, Trump was sworn in as the new US president. In his inauguration address, he pledged to send troops to the country's southern border, introduce a state of national energy emergency, and take back the Panama Canal. Trump also signed nominations for members of his cabinet. Due to low temperatures, the ceremony was moved inside the Capitol for the first time since 1985.
Polish politicians rushed to congratulate Trump on his inauguration.
"Welcome president Trump. We are ready to cooperate, discuss and make business together. And may God keep us in his care," Szymon Holownia, the speaker of the Sejm, lower house, wrote on the X platform.
Also on X, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland's defence minister, wrote: "Congratulations, Donald Trump. I am sure that we are heading for another good chapter of cooperation between our two countries."
According to Mariusz Blaszczak, who leads the parliamentary caucus of the nationalist-leaning Law and Justice party (PiS), Trump's key policies coincide with the programme of Karol Nawrocki, the presidential candidate backed by PiS. "This is what citizens around the world expect!" Blaszczak wrote on X. "Let's end the eco-madness, build a strong army, fight illegal migration and simply (bring back - PAP) normalcy."
Magdalena Biejat, the speaker of the Senate, reacted on a different note, saying that Trump was unpredictable, and it was essential for Poland to focus on Europe as its main ally. "When he is going to undermine the importance and role of NATO, we must invest in a joint European army," she wrote on X.
President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk extended their best wishes to Trump earlier on Monday. (PAP)
