Polish prosecution seeks to strip ex-defence minister of immunity
Prosecutors in Poland have formally asked the lower house of parliament to lift the immunity of Mariusz Blaszczak, the former minister of national defence under the previous Law and Justice (PiS) government, who is facing allegations of revealing classified plans pertaining to the Polish Armed Forces.
In the autumn of 2023, Blaszczak declassified part of the 'Warta' plan from 2011, describing how the military would act in case of a potential Russian attack. It was used to make accusations against PiS predecessors, the centrist Civic Coalition, now the main ruling coalition party, that it had planned to hand over the part of Poland east of the Vistula line to the aggressor.
The motion was filed by Adam Bodnar, the prosecutor general, on Wednesday, Bodnar's spokesperson Anna Adamiak said.
"The assessment of the evidence formed the foundation for accepting the suspicion that Mariusz Blaszczak, as a public servant... exceeded his powers... by disclosing 'top secret' and 'secret' documents... in the media and on the official PiS account on the X platform."
It was the first such incident since the end of the Communist regime in Poland in 1989. (PAP)
