Polish traditional dance on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list
Poland’s traditional dance, the polonaise, has been added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The dance was added to the list during the 18th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Kasane, Botswana, on December 5.
The polonaise is a joyful Polish group dance, which can be enacted by a few to even several hundreds of pairs marching in procession, following a trajectory proposed by the first pair.
The polonaise is the sixth Polish tradition to receive this honour, following the southern city of Krakow's nativity scene tradition (2018), beekeeping culture (2020), falconry (2021), the tradition of floral carpets for Corpus Christi processions (2021), and rafting (2022).
The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity contains elements of intangible cultural heritage that "help demonstrate the diversity of cultural heritage and raise awareness about its importance," according to UNESCO. (PAP)
