Tusk pledges continued backing for Ukraine from Poland and Canada

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Monday that Ukraine can count on continuing wartime and post-war support from Poland, Canada and Europe as he met with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney in Warsaw.

"We both can confirm today the further support from Canada, Poland and our European allies to Ukraine in its defence against the Russian aggression and support in the wake of the war," Tusk said after the meeting with Carney.

Kyiv, however, should not expect Warsaw to be among the countries pledging peacekeeping troops once the fighting ends, Tusk said — a position echoing statements previously made by Tusk and other Polish ministers. Nevertheless, Poland will continue to oversee the "logistical organisation" of aid to Ukraine and the protection of Europe's borders with Russia and Belarus, he added.

Carney praised Poland's stance on ways of helping Ukraine and its engagement in securing a safe end to the full-scale invasion.

Tusk said that relations between Poland and Canada will soon be elevated to the level of a strategic partnership. He added that contacts between the two countries are already close due to their shared interests, and that Polish-Canadian cooperation "is effective and without even a trace of conflict because it is based on authentic values."(PAP)
