US tariffs to exert only 'moderate' impact on Polish economy, says minister
Poland is expected to experience "only a moderate impact" from the newly imposed tariffs on goods imported into the United States, Minister of Finance Andrzej Domanski has said.
In an interview for the private-owned broadcaster TVN24, Domanski said on Friday that the already announced US tariffs would have "only a moderate impact" on the Polish economy due to its strength and a diversified profile.
"We are not as dependent on exports to the United States as other European countries," he said. "Nonetheless, there will be some negative repercussions, particularly since any impact on the German economy will inevitably affect Poland as well," he added.
Domanski said that it was in Poland's best interest to avoid an escalation of the tariff conflict, but to him it was key that the Polish economy was performing well at the moment.
"In the fourth quarter (of 2024 - PAP), the Polish economy recorded the second highest growth rate within the European Union, and the latest data also supports a positive outlook," he said.
On Wednesday, a 25-percent US tariff on imports of steel and aluminium from all countries took effect. In retaliation, the European Commission announced imposing counter-tariffs on goods imported from the US from April, first on alcohol, motorcycles and jeans, and subsequently on beef and sugar.
On Thursday. US President Donald Trump threatened to levy 200-percent tariffs on wine and other alcohol imported from the EU, if the bloc did not remove its tariffs on imported US whiskey. (PAP)
