Weapons found in southeastern Poland not army property - ministry
Polish law enforcement officers have secured unsupervised military equipment found at an airfield in southeastern Poland which does not belong to the Polish army, a spokesperson for the interior ministry has told PAP.
Jacek Dobrzynski said on Wednesday that the local prosecutor's office and the Central Investigation Bureau of Police (CBSP) were investigating the matter using evidence collected by the Internal Security Agency (ABW).
He added that the military equipment belonged to a private owner licensed to trade in arms and that, to his knowledge, the anti-aircraft rocket launchers were meant to be transported to Ukraine.
"The warehouse was not supervised, which is a scandal," Dobrzynski said. "This type of weapon must be stored and monitored properly," he added.
Spokesperson for the defence ministry, Janusz Sejmej, confirmed to PAP that the weapons were not the property of the ministry or the Polish armed forces.
The news was first broken by the private broadcaster Telewizja Republika which reported that containers with armaments had been found at an airfield in Laszki, southeastern Poland, near the border with Ukraine.
Later on Wednesday, Marta Petkowska, the spokesperson of the prosecutor's office in Przemysl, said the investigation into the defence equipment found in Laszki had been ongoing for over a week, focusing on the illegal possession and storage of weapons and ammunition by a private company.
This offence is punishable by a fine, restriction of freedom or imprisonment for up to two years, she added.(PAP)
