Indictment against ex-CEO of Polish oil giant is ready, says prosecution

The Regional Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw has charged Daniel Obajtek, the former CEO of Poland's largest oil company Orlen and a Law and Justice (PiS) MEP, with signing contracts for detective services with an agency he had chosen, a spokesman has said.

An indictment against Obajtek as well as Zbigniew L. (name withheld in accordance with Poland's privacy laws - PAP), the former director of the Control and Security Department in Orlen, and Wojciech K. (name withheld in accordance with Poland's privacy laws - PAP), a detective services provider, has been filed with the Regional Court in Warsaw, Mateusz Martyniuk said on Monday.

"The contracts worth PLN 393,600 (EUR 93,700) were formally signed to investigate cases of unfair competition against Orlen, but were in fact connected with Obajtek's private interests and had neither economic significance nor any connection with the company's safety," Martyniuk said, adding that the crime was punishable by up to five years in prison.

Zbigniew L. has been charged with abusing his authority by approving the payment to the detective agency despite the fact that he knew that "these services served Obajtek's private interests."

Wojciech K. has been accused of signing the contracts even though he was aware of the fact they served Obajtek's private interests and that the agency had been hired to collect personal information about members of the then parliamentary opposition.

In October, the European Parliament (EP) lifted Obajtek's immunity, clearing the way for prosecutors to file formal charges. (PAP)
