The programme had been due to expire at the end of 2025. According to the Chinese foreign ministry, the scheme allows holders of ordinary passports to enter the country without a visa for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges or transit.

Beijing also announced that from November 10 this year, citizens of Sweden will be included in the programme, which now covers 32 European countries, as well as several from Asia, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

Officials said the decision is part of China’s broader effort to boost openness and promote international cooperation. Those whose travel does not meet the visa-free criteria must still obtain a visa before entering China.

Poland was added to the short-term visa-free entry list in July 2024. (PAP)
