Chopin 2025: Two Poles to perform in third stage on Wednesday evening
Two Polish pianists, Piotr Pawlak and Yehuda Prokopowicz, will perform on Wednesday evening in the third stage of the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, competing for a place in the final. Pawlak will play at 6pm, followed by Prokopowicz at 7:25pm.
Pawlak, 27, combines music with his passion for mathematics. A laureate of numerous mathematics olympiads, he is writing a doctoral thesis at the University of Gdansk on "the homology of mapping class groups of non-orientable surfaces." He said in a profile for the Fryderyk Chopin Institute that music has always been most important to him. "Music is truly a beautiful language through which one can express every emotion and feeling," he said.
Nineteen-year-old Prokopowicz, born in the Israeli city of Netanya, began playing at the age of four, taught by his older sister. After his second-stage performance, he said that mazurkas are his favourite form and that he feels deeply connected to the Polishness of Chopin's music.
The third stage will end on Thursday evening, when the ten finalists will be announced. The winner will be named during the night of October 20-21 and will receive a gold medal and a EUR 60,000 prize.
The 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition runs from October 2 to 23 and is organised by the National Institute of Fryderyk Chopin.
