Ruling party will defend Polish currency - leader
The ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) will defend the Polish zloty, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński said on Saturday at a regional party convention in Bydgoszcz, northern Poland, held ahead the European Parliament elections scheduled for May 26 in Poland.
"We have very high stakes ahead of us; we will decide on the fate of Poland and Poles," Kaczyński stressed.
In this context, he pointed to the need to defend the Polish zloty (złotówka in Polish). "The złotówka enables us to grow (economically - PAP), it protects us in the event of crises. (...) It allows us to go forward, sometimes slower, sometimes faster, or as today to be the second in Europe," he explained.
The PiS leader argued that Polish zloty is "at risk today" as the opposition "will strive to introduce the euro in Poland."
According to Kaczyński, the effects of joining the eurozone are not beneficial for "economically weaker countries like Greece," and only two countries gain from having euro as currency: Germany and the Netherlands.
"Therefore, the defence of the zloty, the ability to defend against this change is so important," he stressed. (PAP)
