Elzbieta Witek elected new lower house speaker

Former Polish Interior Minister Elzbieta Witek was elected Sejm (lower house) speaker during a Friday vote.

Witek's candidacy for the post was forwarded by the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS). She was supported by 245 MPs, 135 MPS voted for the opposition's Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska. 

Elzbieta Witek, who was recalled from the post of Interior Minister by President Andrzej Duda on Friday morning, replaces Marek Kuchcinski who resigned from the post earlier in the day amid controversy around his flights on government aircraft, including flights with his relatives on board. 

According to information obtained by PAP, Witek is to be replaced as the interior minister by the present government coordinator of special services Mariusz Kaminski. (PAP)
